Bill Viola (Nueva York, 1951) es un artista estadounidense. BiografíaBill Viola nace en 1951 en Nueva York. La vocación artística le surge ya en su infancia. Realiza sus estudios de arte en la Universidad de Siracusa, centro pionero en la utilización de nuevos medios de expresión. En aquel momento, el arte de épocas pasadas no despertaba en él interés alguno. A principios de los años 1970, el videoarte buscaba su lugar como forma artística autónoma y Viola fue testigo y partícipe de este proceso, influenciado por Bruce Nauman, Peter Campus, Vito Acconci, Nam June Paik, Joseph Beuys, Wolf Vostell, Frank Gillette, Ira Zinder, Juan Downey.A finales de los años 1970 y principios de los años 1980, sus ideas y su capacidad técnica experimentan un impulso, debido en parte al desarrollo de los medios audiovisuales y a su propia evolución en el plano personal. Su perspectiva vital da un giro; como él mismo explica:Para mí, el paso de las ideas sobre perfección social a la idea de autoperfección constituyó un momento muy decisivo. Adopté esta idea, integrándola con la performance y el body art y partir de entonces he trabajado con ella (Walsh, John (ed.). Bill Viola: Las Pasiones (cat.exp). Fuentes y notas de Bill Viola, Madrid, Fundación “la Caixa”, 2004, pág. 13.)Este cambio fue motivado por su descubrimiento de la religiosidad oriental (budismo, pensamiento zen, sufismo,…) y de los místicos cristianos (San Juan de la Cruz), en lo que parece una búsqueda de una espiritualidad transversal.Su inquietud espiritual le llevó a viajar por todo el mundo, realizando numerosas grabaciones, como Chott El-Djerid (A Portrait in Light and Heat), en el desierto de Túnez o Hatsu Yume, en Japón. En uno de sus múltiples viajes, conoció a la fotógrafa Kira Perov, que se convertiría en su mujer, apoyo fundamental en su carrera.Son las vídeo instalaciones la parte más conocida de la obra de Viola. En ellas, aparecen de manera recurrente representaciones oníricas y temas como los ciclos vitales, el nacimiento o la muerte.En su proceso de maduración, surge en él un interés creciente por el arte de periodos anteriores, y, específicamente, por el arte tardomedieval y renacentista. La muerte de su madre, que fue para el artista una experiencia extremadamente dolorosa, acentuó aún más su inclinación por lo espiritual, particularmente por su expresión en la pintura de dichas épocas.Entre sus exposiciones, destacan Hatsu Yume, en Japón, y Bill Viola. Las Horas Invisibles organizada por el Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo, en la Alhambra de Granada (España). En 2005, la Fundación La Caixa expuso en Madrid y otras ciudades españolas las piezas más destacadas de su proyecto dedicado a Las Pasiones.
